The origin of funny Deep Thoughts

Deep Thoughts refers for many of to to "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey" as the capsule in Saturday Night Live. It was meant to be funny and became hugely popular in the 80's and the 90's.

Deep Thoughts first appeared in late 1984 in writing newspapers and magazines.
The one-liners were to become Handey's signature work, notable for their concise humor and their outlandish hypothetical situations. [Wikipedia]
 In the late 80's it appeared in television during commercials breaks of the Comedy Channel. 
Throughout the nineties, the Deep Thoughts capsules were fully integrated into the SNL show and became famous to many american.

Those capsules became an iconic feature of SNL, which usually got multiple Thoughts in every episode, which contributed to made Handey a well-known name.
